Cold Spots On Radiators

What does cold patches on my radiator mean?

Having cold spots on your radiator isn’t initially a cause for concern, if the cold patch is at the top of the radiator and the bottom is still warm. This is likely due to air, and can be rectified by following the steps set out here.

Before you panic that your radiator is heating up or has cold patches, check that both the valves are turned on.

Cold patches in the middle/bottom of the radiator?

Radiators that are cold at the bottom could be caused by a build-up of scale, rust or sludge, which obstructs the flow of water. We can confirm the presence of sludge in the system by testing the water quality, and using thermal imaging technology.

To fix this issue, we recommend you get a qualified engineer to visit your home and conduct a system cleanse. This is done by carrying out a powerflush, or magnetic system cleanse.

This aims to clear your system of any substances that may be obstructing the flow of water by sending a chemically-infused liquid through your boiler, pipes and radiators at a high velocity.

This process could restore the efficiency of your central heating system and solve your cold patches problem. If your sludge problem is more serious, you may require some pipework replaced.

If you have any cold spots in your radiators, one of our Gas Safe Registered engineers would be more than happy to help you resolve the issues.
